Bukovinian Folk Songbook: Handwritten Ukrainian Songs
A Handwritten Ukrainian Folk Songbook (1909)
This small notebook, meticulously handwritten in 1909 and repeatedly signed by what may be the owner/compiler Гофiна Нrепeнiкъ.
Signed along with the flowing cursive “Hrynozak” (Hrynczak) and the note “Неспізн.” for anonymous folk material.
It is a personal collection of traditional Ukrainian songs from the Bukovina region. Dated entries such as “2/i 1909” and location notes seem to confirm its origin.
Spanning dozens of numbered pages, it preserves love laments, maternal farewells, Cossack ballads, drinking songs, and vivid scenes of village life.
With characteristic repetitions (2р.), dialectal spelling, and raw emotional depth, these songs capture the living voice of early 20th-century Ukrainian rural culture — an interesting surviving artifact of folklore.
I have no idea who wrote it or how it came to be in my moms possession. Any insights would be appreciated.
